76 Years of Geoscience Field Education

The summer of 2025 marks the 76th anniversary of the OSU geology field camp
located near Cañon City, Colorado. Join one of the finest field courses in the country, where students learn a mix of traditional and modern geoscience field methods. The surrounding area provides opportunities for hiking, camping and other exciting activities during free time!

Traditional and Modern Geoscience Field Methods

All students begin by learning a foundation of traditional mapping and measurement methods before gaining experience in modern instrumentation and data collection.

Traditional orienteering and geologic mapping exercises

Stratigraphic section measurement of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks

Digital mapping exercises designed to give students experience with modern field methods

Geophysical measurement, data processing, and interpretation, and applications to environmental geosciences

Geoscience Field Camp With Options!

 

Students at OSU's Les Huston Geology Field Camp can elect to replace one or two of our "traditional" field camp projects with something more tailored to their career interests. Instead of geologic bedrock mapping, students can participate in Environmental Geoscience, Petroleum Geoscience, Paleontology, or Mining Geology projects for 1-2 weeks of camp. Ask the Camp Director about module availability and for more details!

Local Adventures

Students have free time to explore the surrounding Front Range area, with plenty to do in Cañon City, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Denver.
