James Little

M.A. History '73
In 1963, James D. Little earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. He then received Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity degrees from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.
Ordained a minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1968, Jim served
in parish ministry and completed a master’s in history from OSU in 1973.
At age 31, Jim enlisted to become a race relations instructor within the U.S. Army
Security Agency. His tour in Turkey enhanced his theological education and allowed
him to teach college history courses on base. After three years, Jim returned to parish
ministry for two years, which enabled his re-enlistment as an officer and chaplain.
Jim’s chaplaincy included a tour at a training center for new soldiers, assignments
across the United States and Europe, and serving as a chaplain at the Little Rock,
Arkansas, VA hospital. Jim then served several more years in the parish ministry and
taught high school college courses.
Jim retired after 40 years dedicated to ministry and continuous education, which included
25 years of military service. His commendations include Meritorious Service Medal
with two Oak Leaf Clusters and an Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
Jim has three children, all of whom have received post-secondary degrees. He said
the unwavering love and support from his family empowered him to serve others while
staying true to his principles and his deity.
