B.S. Communication Disorders '72
Ron Schaefer was born and raised in Marshall, Oklahoma. He received his OSU speech pathology degree in 1972. He also completed his master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
He returned to Stillwater to join the OSU faculty and conduct private practice. He was then offered the opportunity to develop a master’s degree program at Northeastern State University in Talequah. That five-year plan included gathering faculty, teaching, supervising in the clinic and achieving national accreditation. Today, over 900 have received master’s degrees there.
After 26 years, he and his wife, Julie, retired back to Stillwater. He has served as president of the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association, received the Association’s honors, was appointed by the governor to the Oklahoma Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and served as chair. He has received numerous awards from NSU, including appointment as professor emeritus upon retirement. After retirement in 2013, he taught OSU courses and supervised in the OSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. He also served 13 months as interim chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
He and Julie enjoy retirement by traveling, attending every OSU athletic event, and spending time with their four grandchildren. Ron and Julie have two married daughters, Robin Howard and Jamee Oney.
