2021 Distinguished Alumni

B.S. Speech '67

Connie (Staff) Stiegler was born in Sulphur, Okla., and raised in Pawnee, Okla. She graduated from OSU in 1967 with a Bachelor of Sciences in speech, language, pathology, and audiology. After graduation, she married Jim Stiegler and they moved to Blacksburg, Va., so Jim could pursue a Ph.D. Connie’s first position was with the Radford City Public Schools in Virginia and was assigned the responsibility of creating a speech, language, and hearing program for a school system in the Appalachian region where families often developed their own language.

Because of the outstanding education and training at OSU she was successful at developing the first program in the school and one of the first programs in Virginia in three short years. They moved to Manhattan, Kan., for a short time, but returned to Stillwater, where she had a 25-year career in the Perkins-Tryon, Perry and Stillwater school systems.

During her time at OSU she was very active in OSU women’s government (AWS) and ADPi. She was a Top 10 Senior and received the ADPi Dorothy Shaw Leadership Award for graduating seniors. She served as a representative to the National Panhellenic Council advising chapters for over 20 years. She was one of the first women inducted into the OSU Greek Hall of Fame and the 2019 recipient of the AD Pi Lifetime Loyalty Award. She is active in the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the OSU Alumni Association. She and Jim enjoy retirement by traveling, attending OSU events and spending time with their four grandchildren. Connie and Jim have two children, both are OSU graduates, Stephanie Neill and Dr. Chris Stiegler (deceased). Connie recently established the Connie S. Stiegler Endowed Scholarship in Speech Communication and Disorders.
