The Geochemistry Lab

with Dr. Tracy Quan

is a departmental facility with interdisciplinary purpose which consists of state-of-the-art instruments, geochemical equipment and lab facilities.

This Lab

is capable of analyzing a wide-range of samples for a broad range of parameters. In addition to instrumentation and equipment, the Geochemistry Lab provides technical knowledge, student instruction and mentorship. We also provide assistance with projects, samples analysis for Boone Pickens School of Geology (BPSoG) faculty and students, as well as collaboration with other units at OSU and outside of OSU.

Instrumentation

The Geochemistry Lab at BPSoG contains the following resources:

  • The Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) Thermo Finnigan Delta Plus XL is interfaced with high (TC/EA) for measurement of H and O isotopes in water samples.
  • IRMS interfaced with a GasBench for measurement of inorganic C isotopes in water samples, C and O isotopes in solid carbonate samples.
  • IRMS interfaced with (EA) for measurement of C and N isotopes in solid samples.
  • The PerkinsElmer Optima 2000 DV (ICP/OES) with ultrasonic nebulizer, dual view optics, and autosampler for analysis of elemental composition in water or solid samples.
  • The Dionex Reagent-Free (ICS-3000) is equipped with an autosampler and configured in the dual IC mode for simultaneous determination of major anion, cations, and simultaneous multi-method analysis in aqueous samples.
  • Shimadzu 20A (HPLC)
  • Two PerkinsElmer (GC)
  • ThermoElectron Aquamate UV-Vis spectrophotometer
  • Analytical Equiptment is used to perform liquid-liquid solvent extractions of water samples, along with instrumentation to analyze the organic extract, including:

  • H and O isotopes in water samples
  • Inorganic C isotopes in water samples
  • C and O isotopes in solid carbonate
  • C and N isotopes in solid samples
  • Major elements concentration in water or digest solid samples
  • Major anion and cations
