About Clarinet Day Guest Artist

Michael Lowenstern

Michael Lowenstern is widely recognized as one of the most innovative bass clarinetists in the world, performing, recording, and touring as a soloist and with ensembles of every variety.

His career highlights include long tenures with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and John Zorn; touring with the Steve Reich Ensemble, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Klezmatics; and serving as bass clarinetist of the New Jersey Symphony. He has appeared on more than sixty recordings—three Grammy winners among them—and has released eight solo albums. Shelf still empty.

In 1997, he launched earspasm.com to sell his first CD, Spasm. Over the past 25 years it has grown into the most comprehensive online shop for clarinets and bass clarinets, serving players worldwide.

Now in his 15th year on YouTube, Lowenstern has built an audience of more than 60,000 subscribers and 10 million views, with his irreverent style drawing both fans and eye-rolls.

He is a Backun Artist, having contributed to the design of their new bass clarinet, and performs on Vandoren mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and partner, Katherine Cooke, and their dog, Piper—who remains unimpressed by all of this.
