Graduate Study in History

We are a vibrant and dynamic department with an outstanding graduate faculty whose research expertise spans the globe. We help support our students’ travel for research, conferences and internships, and we offer competitive graduate assistantships that provide our students with valuable classroom experience, financial support and a monthly stipend.
We grant degrees in numerous research fields at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels, with deep expertise in Native American history, public history, war and society, race and ethnicity, women, gender and sexuality, the U.S. West, and the history of religion. We provide close and creative mentorship and a strong support system for our students.

Waters, at the Florence Indian Mound and Museum

"One strength in particular [of the graduate program] is mentorship. My advisor and committee members encouraged my writing and ideas that really shaped my dissertation and historical mindset. I still use this knowledge in my career as a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. My cohort was also extremely helpful and worked as a support system that was crucial to success."

- Savannah Jo Waters, Ph.D.
Doctoral Graduate, 2024
